The
Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory will hold its 2006 User Meeting on
June 14-16, 2006, Wednesday Noon through Friday Noon, at the
Pollard Technology Conference Center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The CNMS began operation on October 1, 2005 as the first of five
new DOE-sponsored Nanoscale Science Research Centers. With the
opening of its new building, the CNMS offers users access to
research facilities and staff expertise in all seven of
its Scientific
Themes.
The 2006 User Meeting provides a timely opportunity for current and prospective
CNMS users to learn about the newest capabilities that are becoming
available during 2006, and to meet directly with
CNMS scientists to discuss and plan their user research and/or proposals.
The next proposal submission period will follow the User Meeting in late
summer of 2006.
The
2006 User Meeting Agenda features:
- Detailed
presentations by CNMS scientific leaders describing the new
capabilities available to users.
- Invited
plenary talks by international leaders presenting
their vision of nanoscience research challenges and opportunities
in selected CNMS Scientific Theme areas:
Prof. Joseph M. DeSimone (University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)
"Adapting Fabrication Techniques from
the Microelectronics Industry for making Versatile
Carriers for Nanomedicine Applications"
Prof. Collin L. Broholm (Johns
Hopkins University)
"Ferroelectricity in Frustrated Magnets"
Prof. Dawn Bonnell (University of Pennsylvania)
"Defect Mediated Transport at the Nanometer Scale"
Prof. Douglas Scalapino (University of California,
Santa Barbara)
"The 2D Hubbard Model and the High-Tc Cuprate Problem"
Prof. Alexis T. Bell (University of California, Berkeley)
"Combining Information from Experimental and
Theoretical Methods to Understand the Origins of Catalyst
Selectivity and Activity"
- The
CNMS poster EXPO on Wednesday evening will
provide discussion opportunities with CNMS staff and a detailed
guide to state-of-the-art and unique capabilities available
to users, including some that exploit synergies with other
ORNL User Facilities and CNMS-affiliated research areas,
e.g., neutron scattering at the Spallation Neutron Source
and High Flux Isotope Reactor, and high-resolution electron
microscopy.
- Proposal-planning
Breakout Sessions with CNMS Staff—A highlight
of the program is the provision of ample time on Thursday
afternoon and Friday morning for prospective users to schedule
individual discussions with CNMS staff in order to plan
their research proposals and/or discuss current
research.
- User
Research Talks and Posters—Current CNMS
users will present results of their research and share
their experiences. The first CNMS User Poster Session on
Thursday evening will provide a great opportunity for grad
students and postdocs to present and discuss their research
with CNMS staff and other users.
- As
a highlight of this meeting, the CNMS will sponsor the first RIDGEDANCE
NANOSCIENCE FILM FESTIVAL following the
buffet banquet dinner on Thursday evening June 15th. Participants
are invited to submit film clip of their work.
- Complete
information on how to become a CNMS User and
modes of access.
- Walking
tours of the new CNMS building and related ORNL
User Facilities (please see Registration Form).
This
User Meeting is open to the public. The CNMS is a highly collaborative
national user research facility dedicated to the synthesis,
characterization, theory/modeling/simulation, and design of
nanoscale materials and their integration into functional systems. |
